Interview with Jenny Lönnkvist

World of Orienteering
/ Ultimate Orienteering – Give a short presentation of yourself.
Jenny Lönnkvist - I am a creative person with a strong will, who knows what she wants. I love to compete but I hate to lose, but I’m not a “bad loser”, I think, I am for ex. not angry or mad a long time after a loss. I am a quite lazy person, I like to just relax in the sofa in front of the TV. That’s why it’s important for me to have a good trainer who tells me what to do every day. Now I have my cousin Stefan as a trainer, he has been a bicycle pro for many years and has much experience of physical training. I’m running for Tullinge SK, it’s a great club with lots of things going on right now.

I graduated from the orienteering gymnasium in Eksjö this June where I lived for 3 year with 35 other orienteers, now I’m working to Christmas. After the Christmas holiday I will start studying again to become a nurse, I’m really looking forward to it. I have two siblings, my sister and I are really close and I love her.

WoO / UO -What was the highlight of the 2008 season for you?
J L -The biggest highlight was to run towards the goal at the JWOC-relay, together with the girls. It was a great moment for me. And also the JWOC long distance was a big moment for me, but in some how the relay felt greater, maybe because of the loss the year before and also because I got to share the happiness whit Beata and Lina.

WoO / UOWhat is your thought about being nominated for the orienteering achievement of 2008?
J LI´m grateful! It’s really fun to be nominated for this price, it makes me feel special and appreciate all my good results this year.

WoO / UO – What are your main goals for the future?
J LRight now my goals are set on JWOC in Italy. I’ve been there two times this year and have got many experiences from the terrain that I will think of during the winter training. But in the future I also hope that I will achieve medals in WOC, it has always been my dream to win WOC.

WoO / UO – Where is your favourite place to orienteer – where you would advice our readers to travel?
J LSouth Stockholm, I love it. It’s always fun to run there, and such a nice terrain. It’s a very technical terrain, with many details and small hills. I happen to live in South Stockholm right now, so for me my life is quite good now!

WoO / UO – Can you describe your thoughest training week in 2008 (day-by-day)? Did that have any specific impact for your great achievements in 2008?

J LOne week in: winter
Monskiing 40min
Tue- rest
Wed- skiing 3h
ThuInt. 4*4/3min
FriSkiing 2h40min
Sat – Skiing 2h
SunSkiing 1h
Total: 10h 30min

One week in: spring
Mon -muscle strength 1h
Tue – Int. 4*4/3min
Wed – rest
Thu – orienteering 85min
Fri – 1. Orienteering 55min 2. Orienteering 45min
Sat – 1. Relay 70min 2. Orienteering 60minSunorienteering 80min
Total: 8h 35min

I don’t think that just one week has any specific impact for my results, it takes years and several weeks to be in the top.

WoO / UO – Are you a professional orienteer? How many percent is your work/study that you do besides orienteering compared to a full position – and how many hours do you train each year?
J LNo I’m not a professional orienteer and I don’t want to be one either. I want to have a life besides the orienteering as much as possible. Now I’m working 50% at a school, it’s a great job and I like it. I don’t know how many hours I train each year, I’m not a person how care about static and time and so on. I like to just take it chill. But I now that I don’t train as much compared to others in my age.

WoO / UO – In your training: Do you put priority on running in the forest or on the road/track? What is your PB in 3000m/5000m?
J L
-I like both forest and tracks, but for some years now I have had problems with my calves and because of that I haven´t been able to run as much in the forest. My calves are better now, and aren’t causing any problem anymore. Now I can run where ever I want, but I don’t train much orienteering because I easily get unmotivated.

I’ve just run 3000m once and then I had been injured for a while so I got a really bad time. But I’m thinking of running those distances more this winter.
