Alexandersson and Steiwer reign middle distance

by Niels-Peter Foppen on July 9, 2010

“A youngster full of potential, who doesn’t hesitate to tackle all her older concurrents.” That is how we described Tove Alexandersson in our overview of promising juniors for JWOC 2010. In the early afternoon Alexandersson headed out into the forest with a clear task; defending the title of World Champion middle distance she achieved last year in Primiero. It was a bit tricky in the first part of the course she told afterwards, but the controls in the small contour detailed area did not tricked the young Swede and she ran an outstanding race. “The terrain was pretty open, so it really was not that hard…” she continues. For the second year in row she grabbed the gold medal.

Alexandersson’s countrywoman Lilian Forsgren clocked this afternoon’s second fastest time with 0:35 behind. “I am incredibly satisfied with silver!” Forsgren commented. Last year in Primiero Sarina Jenzer achieved her best international result so far; a 6th place in sprint. This year the young Swiss returns home with at least one medal; the bronze in middle distance.

Like in the long distance the Swedish runners in the men’s class showed a strong performance; 4 runners in top-6! The Norwegian Gaute Hallan Stiewer prevented a Swedish one-two-three. “The greatest triumph so far!” that is how Stiewer described his outstanding race. He took the lead already from the 3rd control and finished 1:09 ahead of his opponents in Jutland’s coastal terrain. After yesterdays qualification race I knew I had a chance, Steiwer tells. “Today I lost approximately 10 seconds” the 20 year old Norwegian continues.

Jonas Leandersson, who claimed the bronze medal in sprint last Monday, finished as 2nd. His countryman Olle Boström finished 3rd, completing the podium.
