Double for Denmark at JWOC sprint

by Hugo Babel on July 5, 2010

The Danish runners won both gold medals at home for the first race of the JWOC 2010, while the Scandinavian armada showed her strength in the men’s race . The women’s category revealed some surprises from Eastern Europe.

It is an impressive Ida Bobach who won the gold on home ground, taking over 20 seconds to the two surprising Polish runners Hanna Wisniewska and Monika Gajda, followed by Czech runner Tereza Novotna. Second after the first intermediate control already, the Dane didn’t leave any chances to her competitors: after the second intermediate control, her lead over the Polish and Czech orienteers had climbed up to 20 seconds.

Ida Bobach and Tereza Novotna confirmed their silver medals won during the sprint at  JWOC 2009 in Italy, where they had finished at the same rank behind Jenny Lönnkvist -too old this year to take part to JWOC. The surprise came from Emma Klingenberg, the awaited Dane, who got disqualified after a promising start when she missed a control.

Junior world champion in sprint last year in Trentino, Matthias Kyburz didn’t manage to defend his title against the Scandinavian runners. In Italy last year, one could count 4 Swiss athletes in the top 6, but nothing similar this year in Danemark: the second best Swiss runner after Kyburz, Florian Howald, occupies the 32 position only. The Swedish athletes showed a strong performance, with 4 runners in top 7. But still, it is a Dane runner who won in the end and made the Danish success complete. First at the first intermediate control, Rasmus Thrane Hansen flew to the finish, leaving his opponents 20 seconds behind. Before Hansen’s imperial race, the gold seemed promised to Britt Kristian Jones, whose name doesn’t sound unknown, as he won no less than EYOC 2008 sprint distance, in front of a certain… Rasmus Thrane Hansen. Obtaining the silver medal, Jones wrote history in achieving the best performance ever for Great Brittain at JWOC.

The long distance will be held tomorrow and promises some nice suspence. One might have to count again with certaincy on the Scandinavian runners, imposing today with 8 runners in men’s top 10: 3 danes, 1 norwegian and 4 swedes.
