Spring Cup is a great way to start the spring, or end the winter depending on how you look at it. This year Spring Cup is celebrating its 20th anniversary in Nordsjælland, the northern part of Denmark. Organizing races early in spring can cause problems due to large amounts of snow, but all the snow has gone about 2 weeks ago.
The well known 3 days race concept, with its international atmosphere of 16 participating nations, will be combined with new initiatives like the night relay Friday evening – a good opportunity in preparation of 10MILA – and additional classes Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s classic race is a World Ranking Event and counts as part of the Danish senior- and junior ranking lists.
Until the entry deadline there were late entries in the elite classes. This influenced the distribution of runners in M-21E1 and M-21E2 as Spring Cup aims for the strongest field in M-21E1 which consists of 100 runners. For Saturday’s classic race we find in M-21E1 names such as Daniel Hubmann, Baptiste Rollier, Martins Sirmais, Mikhail Mamleev, Pasi Ikonen. In W-21E the field of participants is much weaker because some of the great names are missing. The most well-known runners are Vroni König-Salmi, Maja Alm and Léa Vercellotti.
Night Relay
The terrain of the Night relay is a coastal forest that is easy to run in and allows a good visibility. The area is also covered by a well-developed network of paths. The terrain is not particularly hilly but contains many small details that require careful map reading.
Classic and Relay
The terrain for the classic and relay is typical for Nordsjælland with open coniferous and deciduous forest areas mixed with clearings. In early spring the terrain is easy to run in and allows a good visibility too. A wet winter will make the surface a bit softer. The area has a regular network of forest roads with fewer paths than what is normally seen in Nordsjælland. In general the terrain is not hilly.
