About the World Games
Founded in 1981, the International World Games Association is a non-governmental international organization constituted under Swiss law. Made up of International Sports Federations the International World Games Association administers a quadrennial and multidisciplinary sports event, The World Games, which aspires to equal and exceed the importance of world championships organized by each federation individually. The principal aim of the International World Games Association is to develop the popularity of the sports governed by its Member Federations, to improve their prominence through excellent sporting achievements, and to conserve all the traditional values of sport.
This year the World Games take place in Kaohsiung – Taiwan.
To over 30 diverse, popular and spectacular sports, The World Games are the climax in the competition calendar, providing the common stage for their best athletes to aim for excellence and celebrate unity and friendship across all boundaries.As 3000 of the finest sportsmen and women contest the coveted medals at The World Games, they present the very essence of their sport to the world at large.
The IOF has been a member of the International World Games Association since 1995. In 2001 orienteering made its debut on the program of The World Games held in Akita, Japan.
Orienteering at World Games 2009
In total 36 men and 36 women qualified for the World Games. The orienteering events will be organised at Chengcing Lake and the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. In all three competitions there will be a TV and large video screen production based on 5 cameras – positioned in the forest and in the finish area. In combination with GPS tracking it is a real multi media spectacle.
