June 2, 2009 by Niels-Peter Foppen

In 7 days the World Cup 2009 season kicks-off in Finland at the Open Nordic Orienteering Championships. Salo, located on the coast of south west Finland,is the venue for the 1st and 2nd World Cup race of this season. The terrain will vary from urban area in the citycentre of the Salo for the sprint, to forested land with bare rock and marshes for the middle distance.

In the past mainly Nordic countries participated the Open Nordic Orienteering Championships but since a couple of years all the leading orienteering nations give acte de presence. Until the 1st of May 22 nations entered the competition.  The participation from non-Nordic Countries is based on Special Rules for the 2009 World Cup in Orienteering. This gives the leading nations the opportunity to enter 6 to even 12 runners in each class.

We can look forward to some exciting races!
